Boston Metaphysical Society PRELUDE: Top-notch Steampunk!

By ChaoticNinja
Image
Boston Metaphysical Society: PRELUDE is a collection of short stories that have very important links to the Boston Metaphysical Society web comics. Written by Madeleine Holly-Rosing , Prelude is a cross between an origin story and a supplementary reading that makes the Boston Metaphysical Society universe far more intriguing. The alternate history of Boston Metaphysical Society is every bit entertaining. Ghosts, demons, supernatural beings and prominent Families that vie for ultimate economic and political control – what’s not to like? It's a rarity to like every story in a collection, but  I love them all - all seven of them. While  it’s not really a requirement to read the web comics series, I would have to say that the impact of the short stories would be more pronounced if the reader has read the Boston Metaphysical Society comics. The secrets and revelations in the stories have a greater impact if one is familiar with the alternate world so cleverly creat...

Welcome to Episode 22 of  Conversations over Milk & Cookies  hosted by Kindle Ninja. What is this madness, you ask?  It's my way of supporting members of the  RAVE REVIEWS BOOK CLUB .  We interact with them everyday, directly through tweets, or indirectly through re-tweets, but we don't really know much about them. Their personalities really don't shine through in 140 characters. All the EPISODES of  Conversations over Milk & Cookies  can be found  HERE .  Or you can just look to your right and you'll find the  Quick Links . In this episode, we feature AUTHOR NICHOLAS C. ROSSIS. He's the author of the ' PEARSEUS ' series and ' POWER OF SIX + 1 '  BOOK 3 of PERSEUS IS OUT: ' MAD WATER' Nicholas is the Rave Reviews Book Club's Social Media Director. Let's get to know Nicholas in more than 140 characters, shall we? KINDLE NINJA:   Welcome to Conversations over Milk and Cookie...

The Trouble with the BLURB

By ChaoticNinja
Image
A blurb is a short summary or promotional piece accompanying a creative work. The word was coined in 1907 by American humorist Gelett Burgess (1866–1951).  -Wikipedia The trouble with the blurb is that it tends to overpromise (and the book to underdeliver). We cannot fault the author or the blurb writer entirely because the nature of the blurb is to persuade us (readers) to purchase the book. It will overpromise at some point. After all, it is a sales pitch hiding under the guise of a cleverly written synopsis. It’s a tricky little thing to write because it wants to reveal things without revealing things (see, it really is tricky!). And that part it doesn’t reveal is the proverbial hook that magically transforms ‘window shoppers’ into actual buyers.   An effective blurb reels you in with the book’s perceived (preliminary) brilliance in 200 words or less. It thrills. It provokes. It intrigues.  But there’s also this tiny bit ...

A Perilous Thirst: Vampirically Good

By ChaoticNinja
Image
All right. So, I just had a conversation with a gay vampire, a very intelligent one, I might add. It was an honest conversation, but of course, he was doing all the talking and I was this captive audience. He was so open and candid about his life as a vampire in the time of AIDS epidemic. Even with his charm and confidence, I sensed his fear. It was real. With a vivid recounting of his conquests, he revealed a part of him that’s almost human. A Perilous Thirst is a vampirically good short story that makes you feel that you’re actually there listening to an intriguing vampire character. I don’t even know his name.   ★★★ ★  4/5
